Not many from Kerala have a CV like Basil Thampi's when it comes to cricket. Although he never played international cricket, Thampi has made a name for himself with his accurate yorkers in the first-class circuit and the Indian Premier League (IPL). To note, in 2015, he debuted for Kerala in first-class cricket in the 2014-2015 Ranji Trophy. A right-hand medium-pacer by trade, his ability to bowl consistently at and over 140kmph caught the attention of the erstwhile IPL franchise Gujarat Lions before the 2017 IPL auction that led to him being bought for Rs. 85 lakh. In the same season, he won the Emerging Player Award. In the subsequent IPL season, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs. 95 lakh, and he has been playing for them since then. Following his impressive performance for Gujarat Lions in the 2017 IPL season, Thampi was selected for India's T20 International squad against Sri Lanka for the 2017 series, but he never got to play. However, he was part of the India Blue squad for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 Duleep Trophy seasons.
